When nimble fingers dance Flamenco
"At the beginning, Christoph Denoth digressed to Elizabethan England - a tribute to the recently released CD Mister Dowland's Midnight . [.]
It is true that the resulting sound deviated from that of the lute for which the composer, John Downland, originally wrote the pieces. The fresh approach to their interpretation however fully compensated for this. Dowland's music remained true to its origins on the guitar and flourished thanks to this highly imaginative rendering.
Christoph Denoth presented a clear sound rich in nuances and a technical flair for difficult passages. Like any good narrator, he set accents and skilfully emphasized individual notes. On stage, Christoph Denoth and his instrument quite naturally became a single entity. [.] Obviously, this was a musician who lives his music and goes his very own way. The whole programme was characterized by a wealth of ideas and the personality of this guitarist born in Basel in 1963. [.]
Leo Brower's Sonata unmistakably simmered with the rhythm of a fandango. The central movement offered enough leeway to cultivate a lyrical sound. And in the beautiful and profound Hommage à Debussy by Manuel de Falla, the subdued parts dominated. ."
