Solorecital

"Due to their focus, soloist recitals are a touch-stone for any interpreter. But surely, the loneliest of all solo instrumentalists is the guitarist. [.] And if, on top of that, he performs as unpretentiously and quietly as Basel guitarist Christoph Denoth, who has been given numerous awards, at his concert at Hans Huber Hall at the Basel Stadtcasino, the famous needle in a haystack could be clearly heard, so high was the concentration that this young musician with his archangel's smile engendered.

The Rich Sound of the Classical Guitar
With his extensive programme from Renaissance to contemporary music, Christoph Denoth skilfully presented all possibilities of the classical guitar and, in addition, demonstrated his perfect memory of music.

And while the beginning with four pieces by John Dowland was still reserved, entirely in tune with the sound of the lute, Denoth revealed all facets of his instrument with works by the most famous guitar composers of the 18 th and 19 th centuries - with pieces by Fernando Sor, Manuel de Falla, Joaquin Turina, and Isaac Albeniz. A bravura interlude was the Rossiniana by Mauro Giuliani with paraphrases of arias by Gioachino Rossini. [.]

The High Purity of Denoth's Playing
Denoth impressively revealed the scope of sound of a modern concert guitar in a contemporary sonata by Leo Brouwer (born 1939). Here, too, the high purity of his playing and a technical brilliance that did not at all rely on portamenti, above all however the approach to new sound dimensions fired us with true enthusiasm.
